Artist's Comments

This piece is actually titled: 12 October 1998. It is in tribute to the life and murder of a young man in Laramie, WY. Matthew was beaten to death because of his sexual orientation. He was left to die on a fence like the one in this image in near freezing temperatures. The crows in this image are the messengers of the dead and in some Native American Traditions they are the bearers of the spirit to the afterlife. May the memory of Matthew and what happened to him never fade in the minds of American citizens. Hate crimes should never be tolerated by anyone.

This image is an Intaglio (Etching) print done in two colors. It took two copper plates to make this image.

Thank you very much. Matthew Shepherd is the reason I've become an activist for what I believe in. Hate crimes are the absolut worst aside from child abuse. It is senseless. I cry everytime I see something about him. Again from all of us. Thank you!!!

This is lovely. My theatre troupe just finished a performance of The Laramie Project, and it was truly moving.

Thank you. I would love to see that performance - I bet it is very moving. Of course everything that I've seen about Matthew Shepherd is very moving. It certainly moved me to stand up for what I believe in.
